The liberal agenda is full of trends, media bias, and activists. During the 2012 election season, the U.S. and its many news outlets were filled with coverage of the ever-growing “gay rights” campaign. It seems that regardless of what the federal government’s purpose is, liberals always find a way to turn an election into one consisting almost entirely of social issues and single-issue voters.

Liberals’ most recent trendy social campaign is one that many are still confused by – and they should be. Transgenders have been covering the headlines in scenarios ranging from young school children wanting to use the other gender’s bathroom, to adult transgenders on TV shows. A transgender is defined as, “denoting or relating to a person whose self-identity does not conform unambiguously to conventional notions of male or female gender.” This idea brings a lot more to the table than just someone’s social beliefs. This issue is far more complicated, and various doctors and psychiatrists have rightly found an interest or concern with it.

Dr. McHugh, Professor of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and an author of many books, has recently come to the forefront due to some of his statements about transgenders. Dr. McHugh is under attack from liberals all over the internet because when using his vast and impressive knowledge of both psychiatry and neurology fields, he stated that transgenderism is a “mental disorder” and should be met with treatment. He also went on to say that sex change is “biologically impossible”.

Naturally, liberals are in an uproar. Dr. McHugh stated some facts – which tend to both scare and upset the sensitive left – about the suicide rate being 20 times higher amongst transgender people who have had a reassignment surgery than non-transgender people.

The media, Hollywood, and the Obama administration are all enabling this mental condition. No one is very surprised with how this agenda has progressed, but enabling this behavior by promoting it as normal is not helpful. As Dr. McHugh said in his commentary in the Wall Street Journal, “policy makers and the media are doing no favors either to the public or the transgendered by treating their confusions as a right in need of defending rather than as a mental disorder that deserves understanding, treatment, and prevention.”

Members of the transgender community argue that they don’t feel “right” in their bodies, or that they feel trapped. To feel this way is not normal, and it is a sign that one needs help, and real help, not new anatomical appendages and daily hormone pills. We as a community should be doing our best to provide these individuals with the right treatment and support. In the end, the liberal agenda is hurting society by demanding that mentally sick people not be allowed treatment without claiming that it is discrimination.
